Day 2: Immersive City Tour of Cusco

Start Your Adventure: At 8:00 AM, your knowledgeable guide will meet you at your hotel in Cusco, ready to embark on a captivating journey through the heart of this ancient city. Depending on the location of your hotel, your day may begin with a scenic walk through the historical district, where you’ll experience the charm of Cusco’s cobblestone streets, or a short drive if your accommodation is further afield.

First Stop: Cusco’s Magnificent Cathedral Your first destination is the awe-inspiring Cusco Cathedral, a stunning architectural gem that houses an extraordinary collection of artwork from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Here, you’ll encounter a unique rendition of the Last Supper, featuring the local delicacy, cuy (guinea pig), as the centerpiece. Marvel at how local artists brilliantly weave regional culture and history into their masterpieces, including the portrayal of the Virgin Mary in the shape of a sacred mountain, reflecting the Incas’ reverence for nature.

Continue to Qoricancha: The Temple of the Sun After exploring the Cathedral, follow your guide through the narrow streets that retain their original Inca walls to Qoricancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun. This sacred site was the most important religious temple in the Inca Empire. Here, you’ll see the fascinating blend of colonial and Inca architecture, as Spanish influences adorned the original Inca structures. Discover the beautifully preserved temples dedicated to celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars, and learn about their significance in Incan spirituality.

Sacsayhuamán: An Architectural Marvel Next, you’ll be transported to the monumental site of Sacsayhuamán. Your guide will regale you with stories of this remarkable construction, whose enormous stones—some weighing up to 120 tons—fit seamlessly together without mortar, showcasing the incredible engineering prowess of the Incas. This archaeological site is a testament to the sophistication and skill of Incan architecture, leaving visitors in awe of its grandeur.

Inca Sites Adventure: Qenqo, Pukapukara, and Tambomachay Your tour continues with a visit to Qenqo, known as the Temple of Mother Earth, where you will explore its enigmatic tunnels and ceremonial spaces. Following this, you’ll head to Pukapukara, an ancient fort that once guarded this vital region. Finally, you’ll make your way to Tambomachay, revered as the Temple of Water, where you can relax to the soothing sounds of flowing water and marvel at the Inca’s innovative aqueducts.

Here, you’ll enjoy a detailed guided tour of this historic site, including the awe-inspiring Temple of Water and the royal bath of the Inca princess. Stroll through lush agricultural terraces, marveling at the remarkable engineering of the Incas while soaking in the panoramic vistas that surround you.

Arrive at the famous salt mines of Maras, where you’ll witness over 3,000 salt ponds, each intricately maintained by local families who have preserved the artisanal methods of their ancestors. Discover how the locals harvest salt by hand, a practice that has been passed down through generations.

Discover the Agricultural Marvels of Moray: Next on your itinerary is Moray, an intriguing agricultural experimentation site of the Incas. Here, archaeologists have uncovered evidence of coca leaves and cotton cultivation in this high-altitude environment. 4. Hiking T-Shirts
Bring at least 3 to 4 moisture-wicking t-shirts designed for hiking, as you’ll likely work up a sweat.
  5. Socks
Pack a minimum of 3 pairs of comfortable hiking socks to keep your feet happy.
  6. Sun Hat
A sun hat is a must-have to shield your face from the sun, especially on outdoor tours.
  7. Light Long Pants

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Meet the Team?
Upon your arrival at Cusco airport, your friendly guide will be waiting for you with a sign displaying “PERU BY LOCALS” along with your name. Cusco airport is small and domestic, making it easy to find your guide, who will assist you with transportation to your hotel and provide guidance about your upcoming tours.

How Long Before Should I Book This Trip?
To ensure a seamless adventure, we recommend booking your trip well in advance, especially when it comes to securing permits for Machu Picchu. It’s never too early to reserve your spot for this iconic destination!

What Is the Weather Like in Machu Picchu Throughout the Year?
Machu Picchu experiences highly variable weather, so packing for various conditions is essential. Our trek crosses ten bio-zones, ranging from high-altitude alpine areas to lush high jungle environments.

During sunny days, you can expect temperatures between 18°C to 25°C (65°F to 77°F). However, on the second day of the trek, temperatures can drop to around 6°C (42°F), particularly at the pass, though time spent at this elevation is minimal.

Machu Picchu generally has a humid climate and warmer temperatures due to its lower altitude near the Amazon Jungle, fluctuating between 23°C to 25°C (73°F to 77°F). The coldest months in Cusco are June and July. The region has two distinct seasons: the wet season (November to March) characterized by daily rain and sunny intervals, and the dry season (April to October), with June and July being the coldest months yet featuring some of the warmest daytime temperatures.

What Will I Eat on the Trip?
We pride ourselves on providing top-notch dining experiences. All restaurants we utilize, such as Morena, Chicha, and Organika, offer à la carte menus with a variety of options, including both meat and vegetarian dishes. If you follow a vegan diet or have specific dietary needs, please inform us in advance so we can accommodate your requirements accordingly.

During the camping segments, enjoy delicious meals prepared from scratch by our talented chefs.

Should I Tip the Guides? If I Do, How Much Should I Tip?
While tipping is appreciated, the amount is entirely at your discretion. Show your gratitude for your guides based on the quality of service you receive throughout your journey.

How Big Will My Group Be?
We specialize in small group tours to provide personalized service and an intimate experience. Our trek groups typically consist of up to 8 people, but often you’ll find 2 to 5 guests, ensuring that your guide can fully engage with each participant and enrich your understanding of Incan sites, flora, and fauna.

How Do I Get Water on the Tours?
Water will be available in the vehicle during your tours. We suggest bringing a Nalgene water bottle or camel bag to minimize waste, as you’ll encounter locals selling bottled water along the way. However, it’s essential to be conscious of litter, as we aim to protect our environment. Refill your bottles whenever you can, and thank you for contributing to our green initiatives. During the trekking portions, we will provide boiled water every day for your convenience.

Can I Pay the Rest of the Balance with a Credit Card, or Does It Have to Be in Cash?
The balance can be paid by credit card. We’ll provide you with detailed instructions on how to complete the payment a couple of weeks before your trip begins.
