When you doubt your level of physical fitness, you get this nagging worry that keeps long adventures from seeing the light of day. Although there are many ways you can prepare yourself for the trek, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you must hit the gym. There are a lot of lay-man steps you can follow that pay dividend once you have embarked on the trek trail.In case you are 50 plus and are looking to get out on a trek, follow the following tips.Give Yourself Time to PrepareGenerally, it takes your body about three weeks to three months to note any significant improvement in your physical fitness level as well as to respond to routine. Therefore, if you have already booked for the trip, your best bet is to start preparing right away.Focus on Cardiovascular FitnessAccording to the American College of Sports and medicine, you need at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity a week with at least 30 minute sessions if you are over 50 years. The most effective aerobic activities for most people are swimming, cycling, brisk walking or jogging which are great preparation for an adventure such as a trips to Machu Picchu. For those who can afford time to get outside, there are many exercises you can perform to improve your cardiovascular performance. For instance, you can perform squats, jumping jacks, leg raises, or plank jacks which require little skill and no equipment. In case you are about go hiking on high mountains, you need high intensity interval training as it improves both the aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Moreover, it gets your body ready for the bursts of strength you need to accomplish the steep hikes. Your legs must be in good shape since most of the time during the hike, you will be using them. Squats, lunges, and calf-raise are some great exercise that focus on leg strength.
